Abstract

The Danube River goes from the west to the east along most of Europe and Sulina Strait is one of the exit points of it to the Black Sea. This strait had a lively traffic in the Ottoman period because of the ships which carried grain from the Danube to Istanbul. However, some negative points resulting from the physical conditions of the strait affected this traffic, the cession or slowing down of the grain flow occured due to the shallowing of the strait’s waters in certain seasons. For preventing this problem, Sünne Mukataası has been founded in 1743 in order to make the tombaz ships available, for transferring the loads of the ships in the shallow areas. After a short period of time, the Waqf of the Kule-i Fener was founded by Beşir Ağa who was the Ağa of Darüssade in order to safeguard the ships and the passangers who especially travelled in the nights.
