Abstract

Jewelry sector exists for centuries in Anatolia and is a craft rather than profession. Together with the rising period of Ottoman empire, jewelry art gained importance in Istanbul and Grand Bazaar which started to be established in year 1461 became the center of jewelry sector within time. From sectoral point of view the period starting from the fist years of Republican period till 1980's can be defined as modernization period. Starting from 1980's, handcraft reduced and modern manufacturing started. Production started with high technology machinery in early 1990's. First examples of today's large enterprises producing jewelry started their activities. In 1990's sector started to become corporate and integrated with the rest of the world. In this context, Istanbul gold exchange and Istanbul gold refinery were established. In the sector today, approximately 5.000 workshops are active.
