Abstract

This paper addresses the manner with which the Adam and Eve scenes in the Vienna Genesis are formed. In the study, the sources, iconographical characteristics and liturgical functions of the scenes containing Adam and Eve have been analyzed, and their similarities and differences have been discussed. In the Early Christianity period the depictions of Adam and Eve, including the First Sin and Expulsion from Paradise, were mainly created in conformity with the traditional scheme. A comparative analysis between the scenes in the Vienna Genesis manuscripts and the similar works from the Late Antiquity-Early Christianity period and Early Byzantine Period have also been conducted. Among the samples listed with a chronological order, priority has been given to the manuscripts. The pictures in the Cotton Genesis (other works which are considered to be created with a direct model from the Cotton Genesis), depictions and architypes from catacombs and sarcophagi, and similar scenes from Byzantine
