Abstract

Naftalan City which is located at West of Azerbaijan with over nine thousand population is well known because of using an underground resource, a type of non flammable petroleum called “Neft” for health tourism since 1933. Until the independence gained in 1991, Azerbaijan was within The Soviet Union which had over twenty two million square kilometers area and nearly three hundred million population. There was 15 countries within The Soviet Union and movement between countries was free. Naftalan was a very famous touristic destination around The Soviet Union with its half hotel-half hospital accomodations called “sanatorium” until 1991. The city of Naftalan, which lost its popularity after 1991 because of conflicts between Azerbaijan and Armenia, is returning to its old popular days due to major investments.
