Abstract

The concept of the homeland come to the fore in the last years of the Ottoman Empire and with the proclamation of the Republic the construction of the homeland has gained importance. Art history, that offer concrete evidence of transformation from geography to homeland is important. Josef Strzygowski (1862-1941) who was an art historian, dealt with Turkish art concept in a comprehensive way for the first time. Celal Esad Arseven (1876-1971) was influenced greatly from Strzygowski and argued that Turkish art has a unique history. Both art historians have dealt with the history of art in the geographical context. In this study, the concept of Turkish how it is handled in Strzygowski and Arseven’s work and the geographical boundaries of Turkish art history will be studied in the context of construction of the homeland.
