Abstract

This article aims to examine the present and possible effects of Chinese-African relations on the People’s Republic of China and African countries as well as to address the international realpolitik implications of the growing Chinese influence in Africa. In Africa, China has been trying to develop a strategy and a way of relationship different from those developed by the traditional actors such as France and Britain that have been active in the continent since the colonial era. Chinese-African relations can relatively increase the economic and diplomatic power of African countries and change the present form of relationship developed by the Western states and institutions with African countries. The main question here for the Western countries is China’s gaining power by using Africa as a stepping stone and bulding its future hegemony by “silently conquering” the continent.
