Abstract

As a philosopher of the Enlightenment, Denis Diderot has been known by Ottoman-Turkish society since the modernization era. Among the philosophers of the Enlightenment, Diderot can even be said to be a writer whose works were translated into Turkish most. However, Ottoman-Turkish society knows Diderot as a philosopher. Though, when the occasion arises, his ideas about education which are instructive in education and which reflect his pioneering attitude are mentioned in some places, those aren’t expressed even in pieces. In this study, Diderot’s ideas about education are conveyed and analyzed in line with İbni Abdurrahman Kamil’s booklet titled “Education and Instruction” – great French philosopher Diderot’s Ideas on Education and Instruction, dated 1895, which was written in the period of Abdülhamid II, when there was an important development in education.
