Abstract

Besides being a period accelerating the collapse of the Ottoman Empire, the nineteenth century is a time during which many Orientalists flocked here for different purposes because of those conditions of the Ottomans. This article seeks to analyze the political attitudes and behaviors of Arminius Vambery during his secret trip to the nineteenth century Ottoman Empire disguising in the role of a dervish. Arminius Vambery, born in Hungary in 1832, due to his intense interest in linguistics, obtained the success of learning many European and Asian languages, and his special interest in Eastern literature led him to take several trips to the East. The purpose of this study is to convey how Arminius Vambery - a Western traveler - depicts the Easterners and how he, with an Orientalist perspective, ‘otherizes’ the differences in his trip starting from Tehran ending in Bukhara.
