Abstract

The family institution was one of the significant elements which shaped the society in the Ottoman period. This institution varied with such factors as region, time, faith and culture etc. Being one of the keystones of the society, the family institution had also a role in shaping the daily life. While the daily life in Uşak and its surroundings, which was scrutinized through transitional process of the Ottoman society into the Republic, presented similarities to other nearby regions; in general terms, it was also in accordance with traditional Turkish lifestyle. Şer’iye records, which shed light on areas such as politics, economy and culture of that time, have been utilized in order to obtain information about the family’s dwelling, household goods, clothing, jewelry, and their economic condition. Although there have been some changes from that period until today, the influence of daily life in the region still continues.
