Abstract

Due to being geographically situated as a bridge between continents, Turkey has been one of the first stops for refugees throughout history just as it is today. The pro-Czarist Russians who left their country behind after the Revolution of 1917 arrived to Turkey in November 1920 as their first stopover on the road to freedom, before emigrating further to cities in central Europe. The Russian emigrants chose Turkey not only because it was easily accessible by land and sea as well as safe, but also because other countries did not accept immigrants under the same conditions that Turkey did. From 1918 until the 1940s, the Russian immigrants significantly influenced the social and cultural life both in Istanbul and in the European cities to which they travelled afterwards. To the Russian immigrants in Istanbul, numbering almost 100.000 in 1921, the city became a second home.
