Abstract

Music is an integral part of cinematic narratives. Usage of music has maintained its importance since the first films because, as an emotive element, music is of crucial importance in the perception of drama. In the earliest years of silent films, there was a weak semantic connection between image and music and this weak connection became more systematical in time to support the semantic structure. Starting from the 1930s, authentic compositions became norm. The connections created by the perceptual, emotional and cognitive relations between music and images construct the narration and semantics of the film through psycho-physical changes and, as a result, brings the audience a catharsis either by stimulation or relaxation. Articulating to the cinematic narration through a sophisticated design, music could provide psychological subtexts to the narrative and reveal inner dramatic aspects which are harder to read through film dialogues and images.
