Abstract

Present study focuses on İstanbullite-Armenian painter, historian, linguist and and topography expert Kozmas Komidas Kömürciyan’s works on art. Commissioned as a diloğlanı (dragoman) in İstanbul Napoli embassy in 1778, Kömürciyan was the painter of Ambassador Count Guglielo Ludolf. He was the painter of the gravures depicting İstanbul’s historical monuments. Some of these gravures documenting late 18th century- İstanbul were displayed in his Italian work: Descrizione Topografica dello Stato presente di Costantinopoli (Topographic Picture of Modern İstanbul). In present paper the drawings displayed in this particular book narrating İstanbul scenery and monuments have been discussed. Besides, the panoramic pictures prepared for embassy diplomats / researchers have been analyzed with respect to the art market in particular era and the contributions of embassy scions in İstanbul on the national art settings have been discussed via specific examples from his works.
