Abstract

Rock monuments taking place among significant archaeological findings of religious beliefs of Phrygian societies are amongst important works of Phrygian rock architecture. In the region which comprises the vicinity of Eskisehir, Afyon and Kutahya called as the valley of Phrygia in Anatolia, the rock monuments found are conceived to have function as Open Air Temples. The rock monuments representing the front side of Phrygian macaroons attract attention with ornamental elements in the forms of acroterium, triangle pediment and cradle roof. The statue and relieves belonging to goddess Kybele who has an important place in Phrygian religious beliefs take place inside the niches carved into the gate shaped rock monuments. The triangle impediment depicted on the rock monuments and facade relief and carving technique seem to be similar to vegetable and geometrics motives.
