Abstract

The building of the Orsay Museum was constructed as a train station at the beginning of the twentieth century. When it ceased to serve functionally, the building is reconstructed as a place to exhibit modern art works. Throughout its history, there has been many controversies ranging from the fate of the building and its lot to the restoration project, from the selections for the collection to the interior design. These polemics has turned the building into an iconic instance on how a state determines a culture policy. The collection, well but not only known by the works of Impressionist and Post-Impressionist art, focuses on the chronological gap between the collection of Louvre Museum and Pompidou Center. This 1848-1914 period refers to a highly eventful passage in terms of art as well as politics. This article intends to study the history and the collection of the Orsay Museum and the discussions around it.
